Train of Life, 2025.

Tai Snaith has created this train of 3 giant echidnas in bronze, concrete and charred redgum to celebrate the significance of the trainline to Wandong, but also to nod towards the resilience of the people of Wandong following the Black Saturday fires.

Echidnas have been found to be quite successful at surviving bushfires (often their quills are burnt), as they can go deep underground and stay in a torpor state for months. Echidnas form a train behind a female during mating season and the last man standing becomes her mate.

Tai worked with contractors Jason Waterhouse from Sculpture Co and Lucas Guilbert timber sculptor to realise the final works. Thanks to Shire of Mitchell.
