The Goddess Atrium was inspired not just by Melbourne’s amazing female musicians, but also by a famous painting by Henri Matisse called L’Atelier Rouge from 1911. As part of the long-standing Art Project series at Bakehouse, I have been comissioned to create a whole room for the iconic studios.

Featuring portraits of some of our finest rockers like Miss Kaninna, Amy Taylor (Amyl and the Sniffers), Simona Castricum, Annaliese Redlich (Lothario) Erica Dunn (Tropical Fuck Storm, Palm Springs, Mod Con), Kaiit, Sampa The Great, Karina Utomo, Missy Higgins, Apollonia Xylouris (Frenzee) and more. Step into the salon and get lost in the world of Melbourne rock goddesses.

Side note- I didn’t use Venetian Red, actually the Dulux colour I chose was called Neon lobster and although I did reference many of a Matisse’s motifs, I also re-imagined the idea of the muse and conflated it with aspects of my own studio (like the chaise longue).
